# Roofing in Paris and the County of Brant

Straight Arrow Roofing & Siding replaces and repairs roofs in Paris and across the County of Brant, about 11 km from our base in Brantford. Paris is part of the County of Brant, which publishes no exemption for re-roofing, so we confirm with the County's building department before any job that changes the roof. 81% of homes in the county are single-detached houses.

## Do you need a building permit to re-roof in Paris?

The County of Brant does not publish a list of work that is exempt from a building permit the way Brantford, Hamilton and Burlington do.[1] That does not mean every re-shingle needs one; it means the County is the one to ask. We call before any job that goes beyond like-for-like shingles, such as a new skylight opening, a change to metal, or structural repairs, and we tell you the answer before you sign.

## How old are the houses in Paris and the County of Brant?

The County of Brant had 14,330 homes in the 2021 Census, and 81% of them were single-detached houses, far more than in the cities around it. 31% were built in 1960 or earlier, and 29% after 2000, so the county has both a historic core and a lot of newer building.[2] The census counts the whole county together; it does not split out Paris.

| Built | Homes | Share |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1960 or earlier | 4,400 | 31% |
| 1961 to 1980 | 2,770 | 19% |
| 1981 to 1990 | 1,395 | 10% |
| 1991 to 2000 | 1,675 | 12% |
| 2001 to 2005 | 1,150 | 8% |
| 2006 to 2010 | 810 | 6% |
| 2011 to 2015 | 735 | 5% |
| 2016 to 2021 | 1,390 | 10% |
| All occupied homes | 14,330 | 100% |

That mix shows up on roofs. In older parts of Paris, expect board decking, chimneys that need new flashing, and attics that were never vented for today's shingles. On newer subdivision houses, many roofs are still the first one the house has had, and the work is usually a clean single-layer tear-off. Out in the county, a detached garage or a workshop often needs a [flat roof](https://straightarrow-dev.pages.dev/services/flat-roofing/) or a [metal roof](https://straightarrow-dev.pages.dev/services/metal-roofing/) of its own.
