# Roof inspections that look at the whole roof

A roof inspection from Straight Arrow Roofing & Siding is a hands-on check of your shingles, flashing, vents, valleys and eaves, and of the attic where we can get in, for old leaks and airflow. It is the first step before any repair or replacement in Brantford, Hamilton, Halton, Cambridge and Paris, and the estimate comes only after the roof has been properly inspected.

## What does a roof inspection check?

| Area | What we look for |
| --- | --- |
| Shingles | Curling, cracking, missing granules, lifted or missing tabs |
| Flashing | Gaps or rust at chimneys, walls, skylights and valleys |
| Vents and pipes | Cracked boots, damaged vents, missing caps |
| Eaves and edges | Drip edge, rotten fascia, eavestroughs pulling away |
| Attic | Water stains, daylight, frost or mould on the deck, blocked soffit vents |
| Layers | How many layers of shingles are already on, which decides what a new roof involves |

## When should you get your roof inspected?

- Before you buy a house, so the roof is part of the price you agree to.

- After a wind storm or hail, before a small problem becomes a leak.

- When you see stains on a ceiling or granules piling up in the eavestroughs.

- When the roof is getting older and you want to plan the replacement instead of being surprised by it.

## What maintenance keeps a roof going longer?

Most of it is simple: clear the eavestroughs and downpipes, so water and ice do not back up under the bottom shingles; keep branches off the roof; reseal or replace flashing before it lets go; and keep the attic vented, so heat and damp do not cook the shingles from underneath or feed ice dams. ## Should you trust a roof inspection that comes with a quote?

It is a fair question. The Province of Ontario's advice is to get quotes from at least three contractors and compare them before deciding, and to ask for proof of damage, such as photos.[1] We will show you what we found and explain it, and you are welcome to compare.
