Roofing in Milton
Straight Arrow Roofing & Siding replaces and repairs roofs in Milton, close to our Burlington office on North Service Road. Milton is the youngest town we work in: 73% of its homes were built after 2000, so many roofs there are still the first roof the house has had. The Town publishes no list of work exempt from a building permit, so we check with its building department first.

Do you need a permit to re-roof in Milton?
Milton is the one town we work in that does not publish an exemption list. Its building permit page says "Before any construction of a new building or renovation can begin, you will need to obtain a building permit."[1] It does not say whether a like-for-like re-shingle counts. Rather than guess, we ask the Town's building department before we book a Milton job and tell you what they said.

What should you expect from a first re-roof on a newer house?
A first replacement is usually the cleanest kind of job: one layer of shingles, a plywood or OSB deck in good shape, and modern framing. Three things are worth checking anyway:
- Venting. Attic ventilation decides how long shingles last. If the original roof wore out early or there was frost in the attic, the venting needs to be fixed, not just copied.
- Valleys and walls. Newer houses have more of both. They are where builder-grade detailing tends to give out first.
- Ice and water protection at the eaves and in every valley, so the new roof is better than the one it replaces.
